Go slow to go fast. This sounds like an oxymoron, I know. It is true, though, that sometimes we need to slow down to get fast results. Here is an example. I bought my daughter the Jillian Michael’s dvd- Ripped in 30. The workout starts deceptively slow. Moves are slow, controlled and focused. If you just watch the video and don’t do it, you might even think it is an easy workout. No, no, my friend, the workout gets your pulse pounding and muscles aching and it is only 24 minutes long. I remember the days in the 80’s when we jumped around doing aerobic exercise and the longer you worked out the better it was suppose to be for your body. A paradigm shift has occurred in the world of exercise.
We can apply this same – go slow to go fast – concept to any goal. Slow, focused moves can produce fast results. For example, let’s say that your goal is to buy a home. The slow focused moves might be carefully assessing where you want to live, what kind of home you like, the desired price range for purchasing, and other items. If you speed through these areas you could make a mistake with a substantial amount of money and/or you can spend a lot more time in the end looking at more houses. When you choose the slow, focused moves upfront, you will recognize your dream home more quickly when you see it and also be more willing to make an offer.
Let’s look at a career goal. When choosing your work, it is beneficial to get to know you really are and what is really important to you- not what is important to your friends, your parents, your spouse… your career goal needs to align with who you are. Focusing on this exploration will help you recognize valuable opportunities and give you the courage to act.
Exercise: Take a minute to consider areas in your life where you might want to go slow to go fast.
